  This is our annual fundraiser to help offset the cost of our Mardi Gras parade float. Let's make this our best spaghetti dinner event ever!

  In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. When the state came looking for a deaf boy to institutionalize him, it was Chona and Nate Timblin, the Black janitor at Moshe’s theater and the unofficial leader of the Black community on Chicken Hill, who worked together to keep the boy safe.

  Weedon Island Preserve - Mangrove Tunnels
  (Rentals Available)

  This is a 3-4 mile path through large mangrove tunnels, with a 1 mile open water paddle back to the start point. Total trip:  about 2.5 hours.  If you’ve never been through the Weedon Island Mangroves, I highly recommend joining us. It’s a wonderful experience!

  Bring your lunch and drinks with you.

  REGISTRATION:

  Please register for this event using the blue "Register" button on this event page.   All attendees are required to register.  I will send information of changes only to those that have registered.

  KAYAK RENTALS:

  Single and tandem kayaks can be rented from Ecomersion at https://ecomersion.com/weedon-island-kayak-rentals/   Their phone is 727-509-7629.   It is up to you to rent and to cancel (48 hour cancellation notice for full refund).

  Rentals are a 10 minute paddle from the ‘launch your own’ site. 

  LAUNCH TIME:

  Be ready to launch and paddle at 12:30 PM

  DIRECTIONS:

  • Travel east on Gandy Blvd (US92).
  • After passing Derby Lane Greyhound Racing Track, turn right on San Martin Blvd. (There is also a brown sign indicating turn for Weedon Island Park.)
  • Travel about one mile, and turn left on Weedon Dr.
  • After entering park, follow main road to the end, which is where the boat launching area is located.

  Parade begins at 7:00 PM on February 17. Come early to the VFW for a drink and some hamburgers. You can check out everyone's costume and the view the other floats. 

  
  

  Walking in the parade with our float is a DBC "Member Only" event. 

  Guest registrations are not permitted for this event.

  
  

  MEMBER REGISTRATION FOR PARADE WALKERS:

  • Members are invited to register to walk in the parade alongside our float.

  • For members walking in the parade, there is a $20 fee to help cover expenses. You will also need to review and electronically sign the waiver form located on the registration page.
    

  REGISTRATION: 

  • Each member needs to register separately in order to sign the required waiver. Click on the blue "Link to Event" button. Only members who plan to walk in the parade need to register.
    

  IMPORTANT NOTES:  
  

  • Each registrant will receive a wristband on the day of the event.  
  • Wristbands will be available at the back of our float prior to the start of the parade.
  • Float number is TBD.
  • Please arrive at the DBC float at least 30 minutes before the start of the parade to get your wristband.

With the help of Lenni’s doting palliative care nurse and Father Arthur, the hospital’s patient chaplain, Lenni and Margot devise a plan to create one hundred paintings showcasing the stories of the century they have lived—stories of love and loss, of courage and kindness, of unexpected tenderness and pure joy. Though the end is near, life isn’t quite done with these unforgettable women just yet.
