  Caladesi Mangrove Trails

  Close to Home AND an Amazing Kayak trip through the Caladesi mangrove trails backup date is Dec. 10 at 12:30.  Eric Graves will be leading this paddle.

  Trip Duration:  This trip offers a short (2.5 hours) and long version (4.5 hours).  The estimated timing includes the paddle to/from the DBC penisula to the starting point of the mangrove trail at the marina (45-60 minutes estimated each way).  You are free to choose whichever version you prefer as we can break into 2 groups if there are choices for both options (just make sure you always have a partner with you).

  Starting and ending location:  DBC peninsula at the Dunedin marina

  Please register so we have a good headcount and waivers completed.

  Bring:  beverage, lunch, especially if planning the long route, sun screen, bug spray (hopefully not needed), and anything else for a fun trip!  Also, since we are in a state park, bring your pass or $2/person to pay at the ranger station when we get to the marina.

  The trip: 

  1. Leaving from the DBC launch area at 9:30AM on Dec. 5. (12:30 on backup date of Dec. 10)
  2. About 45 to 60 minutes along Caladesi Island to the marina.
  3. The start of the mangrove trail is off to the side of the marina.  The first leg inside the mangroves comes out in the sound, where people can decide if they want to head back to the DBC peninsula or continue on the longer route.  This short trip will be an estimated 2.5 hours total.
  4. For those who want to do the longer route (4.5 hours total estimated), we will continue into the mangroves..
  5. We will then finish up in the mangroves and then paddle back to the DBC peninsula.  When we are tired and heading back, we can reflect on 9 year old Myrtle going to elementary school in Dunedin by rowing each way in her small row boat!!

  For our holiday gift exchange we each bring a small gift, or perhaps a re-gift, a thrift store treasure or something funny. (It's not an exchange of generic items worth a certain amount.)

  Place the gift in a brown paper grocery bag and staple or tape it shut so it's surprise to whomever chooses it. We each take a number and pick a bag in turn or take someone else's gift if we like it better! It's always great fun!

  Join us for the Dunedin Old Fashioned Christmas Parade. We will be walking in the  parade HANDING OUT (not throwing) candy canes with the DBC card attached (see above). As the candy canes are handled out, the participant will provide a quick explanation of our mission to rebuild the Dunedin Boat Club and Sailing Center building. There is a limit of 50 people who can walk in the parade, so register early.

  The parade spot number has yet to be received and will be provided in the reminder emails to all registered participants.

  In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. When the state came looking for a deaf boy to institutionalize him, it was Chona and Nate Timblin, the Black janitor at Moshe’s theater and the unofficial leader of the Black community on Chicken Hill, who worked together to keep the boy safe.

  Li-yan and her family align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea. There is ritual and routine, and it has been ever thus for generations. Then one day a jeep appears at the village gate—the first automobile any of them have seen—and a stranger arrives.

  
  

  In this remote Yunnan village, the stranger finds the rare tea he has been seeking and the reticent Akha people. Li-yan, one of the few educated girls on her mountain, translates for the stranger and is among the first to reject the rules that have shaped her existence.
