IN THE BAY
FOR RACE COMMITTEE AND MARK BOAT VOLUNTEERS!!!!!
WEDNESDAY, JULY 22ND
4P—7P

This event is designed for anyone who is thinking of using their boat as a Mark Boat or a Signal Boat from which the race is run, whether in the Gulf or Bay. We will have boats to take you out and demonstrate how to properly stream and set a mark, communicate with the race officer running the race, troll the edges of the race course per directions of the Principal Race Officer (PRO) and retrieve the marks at the end of the race. We will also have a Signal Boat out there so that potential volunteers can see what is involved in running the races, how to check in competitors, practice “countdowns” and flag raisings, observe the start and finish line and keep track of the competitors during the race, all under the direction of the PRO. Plan on going out there with confidence once racing starts in early September.

This is a story about the power of finding solace in literature and a connection with people we might never meet in person. It is about the hubris of youth and the wisdom of old age, and the mistakes and acts of kindness that occur during a lifetime.

Sybil Van Antwerp has throughout her life used letters to make sense of the world and her place in it. Most mornings Sybil sits down to write letters—to her brother, to her best friend, to the president of the university who will not allow her to audit a class she wants to take, to Joan Didion and Larry McMurtry to tell them what she thinks of their latest books, and to one person to whom she writes often yet never sends the letter.

Sybil expects her world to go on as it always has—a mother, grandmother, wife, divorcee, distinguished lawyer, she has lived a very full life. But when letters from someone in her past force her to examine one of the most painful periods of her life, she realizes that the letter she has been writing over the years needs to be read and that she cannot move forward until she finds it in her heart to offer forgiveness.

For this month's meeting we gather together to share fellowship and the joy of the season. There is no book selected.

Our host is Rosemary O'Hara.

For our holiday gift exchange we each bring a small gift, or perhaps a re-gift, a thrift store treasure or something funny. (It's not an exchange of generic items worth a certain amount.)

Place the gift in a brown paper grocery bag and staple or tape it shut so it's surprise to whomever chooses it. We each take a number and pick a bag in turn or take someone else's gift if we like it better! It's always great fun!

You are invited to bring an appetizer or holiday treat and/or a bottle of wine to share.
