The Book Club’s September selection is Wonder Girl, The Magnificent Sporting Life of Babe Didrikson Zaharias, by Don Van Natta, Jr. The book recounts the extraordinary story of this nearly forgotten superstar American athlete.
In addition to winning gold medals in track and field at the 1932 Olympics, Babe was one of the founders of the LPGA and won more tournaments than any golfer in history. At the height of her career she was diagnosed with cancer. She took the daring step of going public with her illness and inspired the world with her efforts to win one more time.
This book has a local angle: Babe played at the Dunedin Country Club when it was a PGA course.
In honor of Babe, this month’s meeting will be held at the Dunedin Country Club, 1050 Palm Blvd., Dunedin. Please sign up on the Book List page so we know you are coming.
