Organized Youth Sailing is coming to Dunedin soon.

The Dunedin Boat Club and Dunedin Kiwanis are working together to make this happen and need your support and help.

Background; Early in its history, thanks to a dock built to accommodate schooners and sloops and the ingenuity of pioneers from as near as Georgia and as far as Scotland, Dunedin became one of Florida's chief seaport and trading centers.  At one time the village had the largest Fleet of sailing vessels in Florida. In keeping with Dunedin's rich maritime history, it is only fitting that today's youth be given the opportunity to learn to sail. The following Mission Statement and Club Goals support the creation of the Dunedin Youth Sailing Association.

Mission; To encourage participation in the sport of sailing as a community-based program for youth ages 8-16, and to provide quality instruction in sailing and safety skills while fostering the values of responsibility, team-building, sportsmanship, and fairness in this ecologically sound sport.

Goals; Establish a firm foundation for the new program. This will involve developing plans for securing and managing:

-         Funding, both startup and ongoing

-         Community Support with; Leaders; Interested parties

-         Staffing; Certified trainers; Volunteers

-         Facilities and equipment; Vessels/Trailers ; Storage/Maintenance

-         Structure and Governance

-         Sailing Curriculum

-         Students; Publicity & Registration ; Ongoing communication

The Dunedin Youth Sailing Association's schedule for start up is to offer summer sessions in June 2009 and begin year around training in September 2009.

How can you help?

We have many needs ; Through the Dunedin Kiwanis Foundation we have a tax advantaged 501c3 for gifting of money, vessels, & equipment. Volunteers will be needed during the sailing program hours (yet to be set). Your skills do not have to include sailing to help. We will have many levels of help that will be needed.

It's for the youth of our community, it's for the historic preservation of our heritage, it's for opportunity to participate in a sport that is growing every year and an activity that is environmentally sound for our local St. Joseph's Sound waters.

Please join in the fun.
